During our recent weekend getaway, I discovered why this 35-mile stretch around the deepest of the Finger Lakes has become a world-class wine destination that rivals California’s Napa Valley.

From innovative family-owned vineyards producing award-winning Rieslings and Cabernet Francs to charming tasting rooms with panoramic lake views, the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is a fantastic Upstate NY road trip destination for wine enthusiasts and casual sippers alike.

And the best part? You can easily explore the highlights in just one incredible weekend.

Best Wineries on Seneca Lake Wine Trail

There are over 100 wineries in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York, with over 30 award winning wineries concentrated around Seneca Lake.

Based on my experience, here are the best Seneca Lake wineries to visit next time you go!

Three Brothers Wineries & Estates

Why go here: The first winery in the United States with multiple tasting rooms on one estate, Three Brothers is an experience and destination all in one. This isn’t your typical winery – it’s designed for everyone to enjoy wine, craft beer, and the stunning Finger Lakes views.

Three Brothers stands out as true innovators in the region. They’re constantly evolving and changing, giving their team creative freedom to foster a fun, inventive environment.

During our visit, they had just launched their new Sangria brand (you might even spot it in gas stations!), and there’s always something new to discover with each season. You could easily spend a whole day here!

What to try: Their diverse selection spans from traditional wines to innovative blends, with something for every taste/preference.

Pro tip: There’s an Airbnb on-site that overlooks the vineyard if you want to wake up in wine country!

Three Brothers Wineries & Estates is located at 623 Lerch Rd, Geneva, NY 14456

Wagner Vineyards Estate Winery

What makes it special: Wagner Vineyards is one of the oldest vineyards on Seneca Lake. It’s the place to visit if you want to learn about wine or try some of the best dry wines in the country. They grow more Cabernet Franc than any other winery in the Finger Lakes and specialize in this varietal.

During our visit, John Pulos (who’s also one of the top Titanic historians!) led an incredible tasting class that was like having access to a walking encyclopedia of wine knowledge.

He explained the history of grapes in France and the Finger Lakes, the differences between grape varieties, and why Wagner produces the best Merlot in the region thanks to their prime location on the east shore of Seneca Lake.

What to try:

  • Lone Oak Cabernet Franc 2022
  • Their exceptional Merlot
  • Meritage (made from three “perfect” grapes: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot)

Cost for a Tasting: $12 for 5 wines and an hour-and-a-half experience

Food: Stop by Ginny Lee Cafe for lunch before wine tasting, which serves sandwiches, appetizers, and personal pizzas. The outdoor seating has one of the best wide open views of Seneca Lake, especially beautiful when the wisteria is in bloom in May.

Wagner Vineyards is located at 9322 St Rt 414, Lodi, NY 14860

Anthony Road Wine Company

Why visit: Anthony Road Wine has one of the most relaxing wine tasting experiences on the trail. Just walk in, pick from six different tasting flights, and they give you everything at once with a detailed card guiding you through the wines, tasting notes, and fermentation process. It’s the perfect place to sit and taste a bunch of different wines at your leisure.

This family-owned winery has been operating for over 50 years and features both a spacious indoor tasting room and an outdoor patio.

What to try:

  • Tony’s Red – their signature chillable red
  • Pinot Blanc – one of the few wineries producing this varietal on Seneca Lake
  • Cabernet Franc/Lemberger blend – aged separately then blended – this was my absolute favorite!

Tasting experience: I chose the “Sibling Rivalry” flight, which featured related wines made with slight variations. It was fascinating to learn how different fermentation processes of the same grape create such distinct wines.

Anthony Road Wine Company is located at 1020 Anthony Rd, Penn Yan, NY 14527

Fox Run Vineyards

What makes it special: Fox Run is a true innovator in sustainability and hospitality. They’re 100% solar-powered (all facilities and winemaking operations), and even their parking lot is made from sand created by crushing their own bottles!

Owner Scott is amazing and offers the first hourly winery tours in the Finger Lakes without requiring reservations. It’s also one of the only wineries with a full cafe that features 100% locally sourced ingredients.

Dining: The cafe menu includes sandwiches, cheese boards, and bison burgers – perfect for a snack before or after your wine tasting.

Fox Run Vineyards is located at 670 NY-14, Penn Yan, NY 14527

Lakewood Vineyards

What makes Lakewood Vineyards special: This family-owned and operated winery has been consistently producing high-quality wines with a wide range of offerings.

What to try:

  • Bubbly Candeo – their signature dry sparkling wine that’s like champagne but unique. It’s not just wine with bubbles; the grapes (a hybrid developed by Cornell) are carefully harvested to achieve perfect balance.

Reservations: Walk-ins welcome, but groups of 6+ should make reservations.

Lakewood Vineyards is located at 4024 NY-14, Watkins Glen, NY 14891

Atwater Vineyards

Why go here: Come to Atwater for a selection of fun and unique wines you won’t find elsewhere in the Finger Lakes. Their intimate tasting room offers a relaxing experience with gorgeous views of Seneca Lake.

The passion of the staff when discussing their winemaking process is infectious and adds so much to the experience.

It was raining when we went, but this is definitely the best Seneca Lake winery to visit if you want to enjoy a glass of your favorite wine while you hang out on the deck for sunset. The views of the lake are unmatched.

What to try:

  • Pétillant Naturel – a fun pink bubbly wine perfect for summer evenings
  • Skin Fermented Pinot Gris (Orange Wine) – pricier but absolutely worth including in your tasting. I couldn’t resist taking home a bottle for myself

Atwater Vineyards is located at 5055 NY-414, Burdett, NY 14818

Best Restaurants Along Seneca Lake Wine Trail

I’m embarrassed to admit that I’ve spent my whole life living in Upstate New York and never knew that the Seneca Lake Wine Trail had such an awesome food scene until now.

But I guess it makes sense, right? Seneca Lake is world-renowned for their wines, so it’s only fair that the food would be just as amazing.

Here are some of our favorite restaurants that we discovered on our road trip:

Stonecat Cafe

Don’t let the modest roadside appearance fool you – Stonecat is a total vibe! This cute restaurant on the southeast shore of Seneca Lake transforms out back with tons of ambient lighting and a gorgeous bar with wide-open views of the hills around Seneca Lake. It reminds me of somewhere you’d find in Washington wine country.

How it works: Walk in, order at the counter, then find a seat inside or out back with various seating options.

What I ordered: A perfect three-course meal including asparagus soup, scallops, and dessert with wine pairings. The prices are very reasonable, especially for dinner in the Finger Lakes.

The atmosphere feels quirky and eclectic. Kind of like what you’d expect in the Pacific Northwest but surprisingly nestled in upstate New York.

Stonecat Cafe is located at 5315 NY-414, Hector, NY 14841

The Elf in the Oak

Currently open Friday-Sunday, 8am-3pm

Don’t skip this unassuming sandwich shop on your way to Watkins Glen (just 9 minutes away)! Like many places in the Finger Lakes, the front doesn’t reveal the gorgeous seating area and lake views waiting out back.

Walk in, pick a seat, order and pay at the window, and they’ll bring food to your table. Dogs are welcome!

Why it’s amazing: Not to be dramatic, but these were the best breakfast sandwiches I’ve ever had in my life. I got a bacon, egg, and cheese while my partner ordered the spicy breakfast sandwich. Both came out piping hot and incredibly fresh in literally 5 minutes.

Don’t miss their daily-special cinnamon rolls baked fresh on-site. Even as someone who’s not normally into sweets, I could easily eat one every day!

The staff is lovely, the coffee is strong, and they’ve perfected their menu by focusing on what they do best.

The Elf in the Oak is located at 4221 NY-414, Burdett, NY 14818

Nickels Pit BBQ

We stumbled into this gem after our initial dinner reservations were cancelled, and wow –  what a happy accident!

Must-try: The fluffy beer-battered fried pickles are absolutely incredible.

Yes, “here” is the name of the restaurant!

This new, casual cafe in Hector serves up tasty breakfast items and a lunch selection featuring barbecue options straight from their in-house smoker. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed meal with a laid-back atmosphere.

GRAFT Wine + Cider Bar

While we didn’t get to visit GRAFT during our trip (it was closed when we stopped by), we’ve heard amazing things about it from locals and can’t wait to visit someday soon!

This intimate wine and cider bar specializes in made-in-New York beverages, serving cider and wine alongside New American fare. Everyone raves about the cozy atmosphere and excellent selection of regional drinks.

GRAFT Wine + Cider Bar is located at 204 N Franklin St, Watkins Glen, NY 14891

Must-Visit Attractions Near Seneca Lake Wine Trail

Watkins Glen State Park

No trip to the Seneca Lake Wine Trail is complete without exploring one of New York’s most famous state parks. Watkins Glen features 19 cascading waterfalls and the famous Rainbow Falls that you’ve probably seen all over social media.

Parking: Main lot is in downtown Watkins Glen. If full, there’s another lot across the street.

Entrance: $10 (good until sunset) or use your Empire Pass. Leave the pass visible in your car window!

Gorge Trail Details

  • Distance: 1.5 miles one way
  • Difficulty: Moderate

  • No dogs allowed

What to expect: The entire gorge is shaded by ferns and foliage. You’ll pass Sentry Bridge, Couch’s Staircase, Cavern Cascade (where you can walk behind the waterfall!), and the famous Rainbow Falls. Falling Waters Boat Tours

Experience Seneca Lake from a completely different perspective with an intimate boat tour (maximum 6 people, private tours available).

Get up close to Hector Falls and beautiful Glenora Falls, tour the lake, and maybe spot bald eagles nesting in the trees.

After our 1.5-hour tour, Captain Frank invited us up to his deck for an up-close view of the waterfall with charcuterie and wine pairings. It’s a super fun and unique way to see waterfalls that only a few people get to experience.

Falling Waters Boat Tours departs from 3816 N Falls Rd, Burdett, NY 14818

Ithaca, NY

Just 45 minutes south of Seneca Lake, the charming college town of Ithaca makes an excellent day trip during your Finger Lakes adventure. This vibrant city is home to Cornell University and offers an incredible combination of stunning waterfalls, craft breweries, and a lively downtown scene that provides the perfect contrast to wine country.

Ithaca is absolutely famous for its gorges and waterfalls – you have to visit Taughannock Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls east of the Rocky Mountains, plus Treman State Park and Buttermilk Falls for more incredible hiking and waterfall views. The brewery scene here is also fantastic, with several craft breweries that are worth checking out if you want to mix up your wine tasting with some local beer.

The downtown area around Ithaca Commons is such a vibe with tons of artisan shops, cute restaurants, and that youthful college town energy. It’s especially gorgeous in fall when the surrounding hills are covered in autumn colors, and honestly, you could easily spend a whole day just wandering around downtown and hiking to waterfalls. If you have extra time during your Seneca Lake trip, Ithaca is definitely worth the short drive!
