Travel Resources

Planning a trip but don’t know where to find the best deals? During my travels, I’ve used and compared a host of travel companies. As a budget traveler, I’m always looking for ways to save the most money. But I’ve found that many of “the best deals” you find floating around online are too good to be true. That’s why I’ve narrowed down my list of reliably budget-friendly travel resources, that are guaranteed to save you the most money, without compromising the comfort of your experience.

Here’s a list of all of my favorite travel resources that I use, time and time again, to plan my adventures. From the best flight search engines to my go-to travel insurance, I’ve got you covered!

Flights

Use these resources to book the cheap flights to anywhere in the world

Google Flights is always my first stop when I’m shopping for flights. If your travel dates are flexible, their fare calendar is the best way to find the best flight deals.

I’ve found some of the best flight deals on Momondo. They do a great job finding cheap flights on lesser known routes and by searching smaller booking sites. Be aware that some of their flights are booked through third parties, so always remember to confirm your reservation directly with the airline after booking.

Skyscanner is great for comparing flight deals and different routes. Their fare calendar isn’t as great as Google Flights, but they have a great “go anywhere” search tool if you don’t have a destination in mind.

Accommodation

Looking to save money on accommodation? Check out these resources

I’m a huge fan of Airbnb. Its my favorite resource for booking affordable, unique, and local accommodation. This is the place where you’ll find everything from studio apartment rentals and homestays, to hidden cabins in the woods. Click here to save $40 on your first booking.

I love Booking.com because they offer flexible cancellation policies and “book now, pay later” payment options. Listings include everything from hotels to guesthouses. While they’re not usually as affordable as Airbnb, you can find some excellent deals if you book in advance.

Agoda is your best resource for hotels, hostels, guesthouses, and resorts in Asia. But if you’re feeling spontaneous, you can always check out their “Today’s Deals” section for last minute promos and discounts on accommodation all over the world.

Hostels are my favorite way to save money and meet other travelers. So when I’m traveling alone or on a budget, I use Hostelworld to find the best deals on hostels all over the world. They have great features such as 24/7 customer service, instant bookings, and honest reviews.

Transportation

Save tons of money on transportation

KAYAK is my go-to for affordable car rentals. Their search engine compares prices across hundreds of travel sites and major car rental companies, such as Enterprise, Hertz, Alamo, Thrifty, and Dollar, to find the best deals. You’ll find the best prices if you book early. And always remember to read the fine print on rental policies.

Auto Europe guarantees you the best price on car rentals in – you guessed it! – Europe. Their search engine is straightforward and easy to use, and compares all major car rental companies onsite. Plus, you can enjoy free cancellation up to 48 hours before your travel date.

Traveling long distance in Europe? BlaBlaCar is a European ridesharing/carpool website that lets you share rides with locals in exchange for gas money. Its a great – and interesting – way to meet locals and fellow travelers, while saving a ton of money on transportation. Check out the Points Guy’s guide to saving money with BlaBaCar.

If you’re traveling around Japan, you’ll need a JR Pass! A JR pass gives you easy access to JR rail lines and transforms super expensive bullet trains into budget travel options. Read more about JR Pass here.

Rail Europe is the best booking site for all things train/rail travel across Europe. You can browse the site for the latest ticket deals. Or buy a Rail Pass if you plan on traveling a lot within one country or between countries. Read more about the Eurail Pass here.

Travel Insurance

Never go without travel insurance!

You’ll need travel insurance to cover yourself against travel risks, such as lost/stolen property, unexpected cancellations, and travel-associated medical costs. World Nomads is my choice for comprehensive and affordable travel insurance packages. I also recommend them to traveler’s on all of my group trips.

*Please note that some of the links below are affiliate links, in which I may earn a small commission if you make a purchase, at no additional cost to you. However, each company listed here is a staple in my trip-planning process. They have each made my travels more comfortable, hassle-free and budget friendly. And that’s, first and foremost, why I’m sharing them with you!
