If you’re looking for quirky boutique hotels in Portland, Oregon, look no further than the Kimpton Hotel Monaco. From the moment you walk through the doors, this place is absolutely overflowing with personality. With unique colors and patterns adorning every surface, eclectic furnishings, commitment to healthy and eco-friendly living, and free (yes, that’s right – free) daily wine hour, its easy to see how this hotel earned its spot as #1 Portland Hotel by TripAdvisor in 2019.
There’s a whole lot to love about this quirky boutique hotel. But here are the top 6 things I know you’ll adore, that will have you booking your stay at Hotel Monaco faster than you can say “Keep Portland Weird!”:
Someone once compared the decor of Hotel Monaco to your crazy aunt. Completely eclectic, but somehow, it all works. And even though she’s a little weird, you love her anyway. And, to be honest, they couldn’t be more spot on.
From the patterned carpets to the ornithology-chic wallpaper, the decor in Hotel Monaco seems to clash, yet – somehow – completely work together. In the hotel, you’ll find a mix of vibrant colors, patterned carpets, wallpaper covered in birds, and a splash of animal print. Weird, right? Well I’ll tell you that it might not work for your outfit tomorrow, but it definitely works for the hotel. But don’t take my word for it – check it out for yourself.
You’ll find 221 guest rooms in the historic building of Hotel Monaco – decorated in their signature eclectic fashion, of course. But the decor isn’t all that gives this hotel its charm.
In each room you’ll find that quaint and quirky meets Portland luxury with spacious rooms, amazing city views, luxury Atelier Bloem bath amenities, complimentary animal print bathrobes, and beds draped in fine Italian linens. Oh, and don’t forget the mini bar, fully stocked with wine, snacks, and kombucha!
The social hour
Perhaps one of my favorite parts of our stay was the daily social hour hosted in the hotel lobby.
You can stop in every evening to enjoy a variety of hors d’ouvers, local brews, and house wine; accompanied by live music from local artists playing everything from piano and guitar to folk rock and swing jazz. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other hotel guests and share travel itineraries.
Tip: Hotel Monaco’s social hour really is the talk of the town, so try to get here early or you’ll be left with standing room only!
Their commitment to healthy living
Hotel Monaco has everything you need to de-stress and live your best (and healthy) life.
From complimentary bicycle rentals to a state of the art fitness center, you can get your endorphins flowing however you like.
You’ll also find a yoga mat (covered in bold prints, of course) in each room if low impact activity is more your style. Personally, having a chance to unwind with my yoga practice in our guestroom was one of the highlights of our stay. And if you’re a new yogi, no worries – just flick on the TV to find a guided yoga practice.
Still stressed? Hotel Monaco also offers in-room massage packages that are well worth checking out!
You’ll find Red Star Tavern tucked inside Hotel Monaco, with its cozy atmosphere and casually-sophisticated dining. Their menu features a variety of dishes crafted from locally sourced PNW ingredients. They’re open for every meal – from breakfast brunch to late night bar munchies.
Most noteably, though, is their happy hour. Red Star Tavern’s happy hour runs every day from 2-6pm and 10pm to close. Stop in for some discounted prices on small plates, microbrews, and creative cocktails.
Its no doubt that Hotel Monaco’s location is something to love. If you’re touring Portland, Hotel Monaco will put you in walking distance to some of the city’s hottest locations such as shopping, breweries, the river, and the best food carts.
You can also explore the city in true Portland style on a complimentary UBLIC bicycle rental at the hotel!
